Comixtreme gives Hotwire: Deep Cut a 4 out of 5
The first Hotwire miniseries was a lot of fun, positing a future world where ghosts were actually a consequence of so much electromagnetism - not so much supernatural as a byproduct of the modern world. Except there are people who insist it’s supernatural, and the cops don’t help by calling the cops assigned to take care of the “blue lights” as “exorcists”.
This one starts with Alice on an extended break in the aftermath of the near disastrous case wrapped up in the first miniseries. She’s playing ancient video games and messing around with an old, dead boyfriend, while the “blue” squad runs into some troublesome blue lighters. The way they handle it leads to some tragic consequences, and when Alice responds to it, she gets arrested for being drunk on the job. (She isn’t, but she sort of is. Hard to explain; you’ll have to read the comic.) And while she rots in the stir, there’s a new blue light stalking the city, one above and beyond the ones they’ve faced before.
This is a fun series, and it’s good to see it back. For those who missed it the first time around, there’s a quick recap at the start, so you don’t need to have read it to get this.
The art remains quite gorgeous. It favors the realistic, painted Radical style, which makes the weirder aspects of the story even weirder, and the action sequences kinetic. Which I like, as it’s how it should be.
A different, action oriented science fiction comic, worth a look when you’re perusing the shelves.

Comicbookjesus reviews Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #4
"For the uninitiated Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead is one of the best looking books on the stands, but it’s also a good old fashioned adventure to boot. You don’t really see stories like this any more, but Radical know how to make them. This title, and City of Dust are just two examples of easily accessible series from the publisher that anyone can pick up and be hooked on. They’re streamlined, but not simple, stories without the complications that some of our fave superhero titles can often be bogged down with."

"Pugh has put everything on to these pages. The story was initiated with writer Warren Ellis, but Pugh boldly makes Hotwire his own. I even noticed the unique styles of the lettering and how he displays dialogue. His panel arrangements are chaotic, yet easy to follow and his costume and tech designs are straight from an unmade James Cameron flick. The luscious variety on display really is an eye opener. Pugh makes the art flow and dance across the page like a tattooed ballerina. It’s unexpected, daring and mesmerising.
When Radical releases the TPB collecting all 4 issues make sure to put it on your wish list. Hotwire has the edginess of 2000AD with the themes of The Matrix and the look of Blade Runner. Those comparisons don’t do it justice, but if you like your sci-fi more William Gibson than Star Trek you’ll be completely satisfied. It’s the kind of series you can pass to your non-comics reading mates to prove a point.
And now that it’s all over, I must say a hearty thank you to Steve Pugh. Job well done sir."

Comics Bulletin reviews Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #4
"Even with this being the fourth issue that I've read I am still blown away by the visuals. Not only are the pencils top notch and done in a realistic style that really lends itself well to the story, but the digital painting really makes the images pop off the page. Artwork simply doesn't get much better."

The Coreburner feasts on the latest issue of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead
"I love Steve Pugh’s art. Seriously, it makes me want to eat this comic and all it’s delicious characters and shapes and colours. I would immediately regretting eating it because I couldn’t look at the art anymore, but luckily, there would be many variant covers to choose from... and eat them too. Seriously, everything about this comic looks good. I really do get hungry from looking at it. "

Hypergeek is hyped on the last chapter of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead
"Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #4 is an amazing comic that deserves to be bought by every self-respecting comic and sci-fi fan on the planet. Everyone knows how much I love 2000 AD, and this comic gives even the best thrills from the Galaxy’s Greatest a good run for their money. Steve Pugh has made this project his baby, pouring a lot of blood, sweat and tears into every single page of this comic, and his efforts really shine though to make this one of the very best comics on the shelf. If you buy one comic this week, make it Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #4"

Advance Review of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #3 from Broken Frontier
Thanks go out to Kris Bather for his advance review of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #3. The comic comes out this week.
"Pugh has handled Hotwire beautifully with every issue. Sure, it’s based on initial story ideas by Warren Ellis, but this is Pugh’s show. He fleshes out enough of the characters around Hotwire, so that she doesn’t steal the show, but also manages to make her a loveable bad girl with real humanity and heroism. The last time I was this much in love with a fictional character was when I started reading X-Men in high school and saw Jim Lee’s Psylocke for the first time. Of course, the way Steve Pugh lusciously renders Alice Hotwire, it’s easy to be pleasantly distracted. Every page is a work of art and you may very well find yourself gazing at the pages longer than the story requires of you. He also lays out the pages and designs all the vehicles and gadgets with great flair.
Pugh really knows how to pace a comic. Every issue thus far has been a grand build up of set pieces culminating in a page, or two, or three that leap directly into the eyeballs and demand to be made into posters for the bedroom wall. This penultimate issue has a few such moments, but I won’t spoil them.
Too often series like this with a grand concept start with a bang and dissolve into a whimper. Hotwire is a glorious exception and is simply excitement unleashed. It’s also a movie begging to be made. With the success Radical have had already with Hollywood interest, I hope Hotwire will be next in line."

Hypergeek is hyped up on the lastest issue of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead
Great review on not just the issue #3 but also points out a good reason for picking up any Radical comic, our low price.
"If you couldn't tell from everything said above, I REALLY like this book :) Pugh has done an amazing job on both the art and writing fronts. As if this wasn't enough, he even letters the damn book! What a ridiculously talented individual! You should rush out and buy this issue of Hotwire, it is sure to be one of the best things coming out this week. While you are at the store, have a look for the first 2 issues, they are also great comics, and are only priced at $2.99. Most small publishing houses are pricing their books at $3.99 + now, due to the harsh economy, but Radical seem to be keeping their prices nice and low. That extra dollar in my wallet feels really good!
Hotwire is only one of the great Sci-Fi comics that Radical Comics have out at the moment, and I would also recommend that you also look up
Shrapnel and
City of Dust, both wonderful books. I'm from the UK originally, and and have been reading 2000 AD since I was a child. It is the gold standard to which I compare all other science fiction comic books. Hotwire, and the other series mentioned, compare amazingly well to the "galaxies greatest". Hopefully Radical will continue to publish more great science fiction comics, they certainly have an eye for greatness!"

Comics Waiting Room gives an advance review of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #3
Steve Pugh and Warren Ellis have created an enormously intelligent idea rife with sass, science fiction, and a sexy leading lady who is impossible to ignore. Given the fact Pugh both writes and illustrates this jaw-dropping, wild ride of a book, it is a wonder how he manages to both spin such a smart story while also creating some of the most stellar artwork ever seen in a comic. The cosmic blend of neon and pastel colors draped over nightmarishly original images of walking skeletons wrapped in crackling energy and metal spiders hungering for fresh meat draws you in, clouding your vision until all you see are the stunning visuals and sharp wit of HOTWIRE. Ending with our heroine’s life in jeopardy, issue three of this must-read has efficiently built suspense for what should be one hell of a conclusion.

It's obvious that BatmanObviously blog loves Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead
“It’s a compelling idea, and Pugh does very good work in the way he balances the dispersal of backstory within the flow of the story; this isn’t an origin of the “blue light,” as the left-behind spirits are called, but as new readers, we need to know enough to follow the story, and Pugh offers just that. While the art is what proverbially removed my socks, the writing and story certainly aren’t a let-down. Nice work on the first impression, Steve Pugh and Radical Comics.”

Comixology reviews Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead
"Great art and a unique story - this is a can't miss book. I was a little leery since I have never bought anything from Radical but they delivered in a big way on this book. The art is jaw dropping and worth the cost of the book alone.
This is a 4 issue mini and if there was ever a book you wanted to try and just take a flier on buying - at $2.99 this is a steal."

Fangoria let the sparks fly in their review of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead
"The writing is excellent with realistic dialogue and meaty portions of story mixed in to give the reader much more time to sit in the panel and live in the world a little bit. Sometimes writers get a little too wordy and lose themselves in sentences just to impress or finally use that word they love that they can never use in a sentence, but Steve Pugh cuts it off just in time before that happens. It was funny to see this actually happen in the lettering when Alice is speaking and her partner, “Nasty Man” Mobey, starts talking over her. I’ve never really seen that in comics, where word balloons stack on top of each other to replicate this kind of speech used in film and stage, but I think I will a lot more now. It worked great, and I probably just gave a bunch of comic book letterers some nifty ideas. Pugh has definitely added a trend here with HOTWIRE, giving fans not only a cinematic experience with the art and writing, but something new to enjoy in the land of comics. Add a hot character that everyone likes, and you have yourself the total comic book package. Welcome to the bad-ass babe club, Alice.
CONTINUE READING? Definitely. The sparks fly off the page in this book, so get some more like it’s Independence Day. Once you lock eyes onto Alice Hotwire, you can’t let go either. She’s butta!"

CBR's Comics Should be Good flips through the April Previews
Greg Burgas, who recently reviewed Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #2, goes through the latest issue on Previews and comments on Radical's solicit for the Hercules: The Thracian Wars and Calbier: First Canon of Justice paperback collections.
"After releasing their series as hardcovers, Radical Comics offers them as softcovers on page 282. If you’re interested but can only get one, I’d suggest Hercules: The Thracian Wars. Quite good, and definitely worth a look at $15."

CBR's Comics Should be Good reviews Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #2
Thanks to Greg Burgas for the great review issue #2.
"Pugh is good enough that he keeps the strangeness going. I mean, there’s a Chinese dragon ghost in this comic, and it’s as awesome as it sounds. The fight with the dragon is the highlight of the comic, as Pugh draws it beautifully and makes it very exciting. I’m really liking this book. It looks very nice, has a cool hook, and Pugh is doing a good job with the story. And a dude blows up! Who doesn’t like dudes blowing up?"

Ain't It Cool News calls Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead, "phenomenal"
Thanks very much to Mark "Ambushbug" Miller for his tremendous review of our series. Issue #1 and #2 are in stores now.
"
HOTWIRE: REQUIEM FOR THE DEAD #2Steve Pugh’s story based on ideas from Warren Ellis about a paranormal investigator battling ghosts in a BLADE RUNNER-esque society continues to be a feast for the eyes. Pugh’s depictions of ghostly possessions and paranormal happenings are fantastic, plus he draws one of the hottest chicks in comics in Hotwire. This is another stunningly beautiful book from Radical, a veritable orchard of artistic talent these days. The story is pretty darn entertaining as well, as the number of possessions are on the rise and paranormal activity is at an all time high, Hotwire is more taxed than ever. Art, story, hot alterna-chicks battling ghosts…it’s an all around phenomenal book. "

I'm So Freakin Cool! praises Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #2
Brikhed's blog, I'm So Freakin Cool! had this to say below. Love the fact that his only complaint is that all our covers are too good to pick from. Life can be so very hard.
"Two issues into the miniseries and this book has hit a homerun both times. My only complaint is that like many of the smaller publishers these days there are three covers to choose from on this issue and it was a hard choice because they are all so good. Radical is relatively new to the marketplace and I am not sure how they will be about collecting their miniseries into trades but if you get a chance and are looking for something a little different this is one heck of a book where it is hard to go wrong and best yet $2.99 is the cover price. That is unheard of these days from one of the little guys."

Comics Bulletin gives a perfect score to Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #2
More love for Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead. This time from Comics Bulletin. It received the highest score possible.
"Pugh's popping colorful artwork compliments the barrage of bytes forming the artist's and Ellis' story and characterization. Photorealistic anatomy and facial construction is the order of the day, but so is action-packed drama given an unusually bright and sparkly palette that defies clichés of the dark, grim and gritty."

If you haven't check out Jinx.com you definitely should. In addition to being a great site for clothing, they have a online community for movies, comics, games, etc.
"For my first book from them, I'm very impressed. Steve Pugh is handling both the writing and illustrating chores, based on a story by Warren Ellis. I'm not sure what Pugh is doing here, but I think much of the art is purely digital. I guess I could ask one of the designers around the office to check it out and let me know for sure, but I'm actually writing this at home while watching a recording of tonight's My Name is Earl. Whatever the case, it's all cool looking, especially his images of ghosts."

Chris' Invincible Super-Blog talks Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead.
Chris Sims not only praises the book but also has nice things to say about Radical Publishing in general.
"According to the credits page, Pugh’s actually handling both the script and the art (and doing a pretty good job on both fronts), which are based on a story by Ellis, which explains why the protagonist is a perky-but-sarcastic platinum blonde with a high concept built right into her name: ALICE HOTWIRE: DETECTIVE EXORCIST.And really, that’s all you need to know about this book: It’s a fun read that stars a character named ALICE HOTWIRE: DETECTIVE EXORCIST, and if you’re the kind of person (i.e., me) who can’t resist that kind of high concept, then you’ll probably get a pretty nice kick out of it. "I find it amusing that this second issue of the Warren Ellis-originated, Steve Pugh-scripted-and-drawn series about futuristic ghost hunters comes with "chick w/o guns" and "chick w/guns" variants. I guess they know what audience they're going for. I never did read the first issue, but it seemed interesting from the reviews I read. I suppose I could try to check it out sometime. "

Bloody Good Horror reviews Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1 and talks about Radical at New York Comic-Con
Couple of great articles from Bloody Good Horror. First article is a great review of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1 and the second involves the guys meeting Steve Pugh and Steve Niles at the Radical booth.
"In comics, it is rare to find a compelling female character who is exceptionally intelligent but has also retained her femininity. Hotwire is one of those rare characters. Hotwire is interesting enough of a character to bring me back next month. Hopefully then, we will get to see what is behind the rise in ghost activity. Besides that, the world Hotwire inhabits is interesting enough to keep me buying the rest of the issues, until this mini-series is over."
http://www.bloodygoodhorror.com/bgh/features/02/06/2009/comics-creepshow-26-hotwire"That is the beauty of this type of event, walking down the aisles you can strike up a conversation with artists and writers, who have worked for months to get their first issue ready for the Con, and then walking down that same aisle you can run into someone like Horror Comics superstar, Steve Niles. Niles was signing copies of his book CITY OF DUST along with HOTWIRE co-creator and artist Steve Pugh. I interviewed both Niles and Pugh, using a ghetto tape recorder, and then proceeded to take a picture of both of them with a disposable camera. Alas, a $12 camera yielded $12 results and that picture came out too dark to post here.
If you are interested in reading my Steve Niles and Steve Pugh interviews, as well as interviews with the Scare Tactix Graphix crew, check out my upcoming blog posts.
Niles and Pugh were sitting at the Radical Comics both which was also the first time the company had a booth at NY Comiccon. The Radical crew members were walking around with their heads held high. This was for two reasons. The first being that Radical was just awarded 'New Comic Publisher of the Year' for 2008 by Diamond Comics Distribution, the major comics distributor in North America. The second being that many of the books put out by Radical have been optioned for films."

Hero Spy reviews Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #2
Couldn't have said it better myself.
"Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #2 is a fast, fun, wiz-bang of a comic, that chooses to be SiFi when it could so easily become just another silly and unbelievable horror book. I like what Steve has created. Hotwire is a gutsy effort and the fact that it’s a one man show from script to lettering is impressive. If you looking for a good Warren Ellis style SiFi thriller then Hotwire is a must read. The comic is published by Radical Publishing and went on sale March 18th. Get down to you’re local comic shop and check it out. "

Comics Bulletin gives an advance review of Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #2
"Hotwire seems to have taken this concept in a more mature themed route, and it works. The characters are believable. Alice is given more depth in this issue as she explains her past and how she became a police officer. She’s actually shown as a normal person as she gets drunk and even has problems with her parents. I found that I’ve come to like her character. he art in this series really gives it its own life. Steve Pugh’s art is awesome. It has this realism to it that also lends itself very well to fantasy and horror. Everything looks like it belongs on the page together. I was worried when I first saw his art that it might not mix well with the spirit aspects of the series, but they blend perfectly. Every character looks alive. There are no stale or forced poses and the book just looks great."

Comicnews.info praises Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #2
issue #2 goes on sale this Wed (March 18th). Courtesy of Gary Rodrigue, here is what Philip Eaves thought of it.
"Truth be told, there isn’t much I can say about Hotwire #2 that I didn’t say about Hotwire #1. Steve Pugh continues to be amazing. When he isn’t using his art to highlight the odd futuristic technology or architecture, he’s giving a quick yet beautiful glance at the heroine Hotwire. If anything, issue #2 seems to be focusing on knocking over all of the rules that the first set up like dominoes. This heightens the threat level of what Hotwire is facing and draws you in for the incredible “oh crap” moments.
There’s a lot going on in this book, and you will need to read it again. Chances are, though, that you will want to read it again. Hotwire is one of those rare books that doesn’t seem rushed. There are layers of narrative going on here, and every character has something genuine to say. Pugh’s art alone deserves a second look-through, as each blue light has been lavishly designed. There’s not much more I can say, folks. Read Hotwire. If you haven’t picked up issue #1, please go and do so. This is a book that really uses the advantages of the medium and shows epic-scale monsters that take your breath away.
Speaking of breath, I’ll be holding mine till the next ish comes out."

Thirteen Minutes Blog takes the time to review Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1
"The book is full of fun characteristics that go the extra mile to give us a little panache, whether it’s the plot all being set amid rioting, or the explanation of using scientific terminology to describe the apparitions to avoid the emotional stigma of the term “ghost.” I loved the hints about potential glitches in the system, basically suggesting a ghost in the machine. Overall, it struck me how dense this book felt, it’s 32 pages, it’s done on beautiful glossy paper, and… it’s still $2.99(!), complete with a statement of intent regarding the price. Now, this is a title I can get behind. Grade A."

Blog Critic Magazine reviews Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1
"Pugh's possession sequences are both atmospheric and action-packed: all crackling green light (long a dramatic convention for depicting ghosts) and mist. If the artist may overdo the pouty-lipped overbite look on his heroine, as scripted, she proves an agreeable hard-ass. "'Most folk' are more likely to read their horoscope than to look both ways when crossing a busy street," this difficult elitist declares near the end of the first ish, and that line alone was enough to make me want to follow her through the rest of this diverting sci-fi horror mini-series."

Comic Pants reviews Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1
"It’s a pretty damn good book...The painty art isn’t just easy to look at it,; it’s easy to follow from panel to panel and does a great job of carrying character expression across. Worth a look at the very least."

Newsarama's Best Shots on Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1
I've posted a lot of great reviews on Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1 but Jeff Marsick puts over both the title and Radical Publishing in his great review. The response to our latest comic has been amazing. You definitely should check it out. Don't take my word for it, read below.
"Radical does it again. And for anyone who’s been hemming and hawing about getting on board with what this company has to offer, Hotwire is definitely the place to start. Go to your store, today, and get this issue. And then get every issue of every other series they put out. You won’t be sorry."

Comics Bulletin tells you why you should buy Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1
"It's difficult to put into words how gorgeous this book is and how real the characters feel. I urge you to buy at least the first issue. You'll be kicking yourself if you don't. This is not homogenous artwork following a robotic house style. This is the kind of illustration that should be adorning the walls of a gallery."

The Comic Addiction gets hooked on Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1
This issue is a good starting point for the series, and Pugh and Ellis have a intriguing and unique plot that is part Ghostbusters part detective mystery, and a whole lot of fun. Radical Comics have been delivering some great stuff since their premiere last year, and Hotwire is no exception to the rule.

Broken Frontier reviews Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1
"Hotwire is off to a great start. It is like an amalgamation of the noirish future of Blade Runner and a straight hard sci-fi approach to Ghostbusters. It is another notch in both of these creators' extremely lauded careers with a broad appeal that should unite some of more segregated genre minded readers."

Steve Pugh and Warren Ellis Charge Up Radical’s Hotwire
Steve Pugh and Warren Ellis Charge Up Radical’s Hotwire
December 17th, 2008 – Ghosts. The cities of the future have grown ankle-deep in them as they graze off the electromagnetic waste of a billion wireless Internet connections. Most can only drift, witless and lost. Rarely, though, something comes through with enough marbles to cause real trouble. And that's where Alice Hotwire, Detective Exorcist, comes in.
Radical Publishing proudly presents its newest title for February 2009, HOTWIRE: REQUIEM FOR THE DEAD. Written and illustrated by Steve Pugh, based on an original story by Warren Ellis, the four-issue mini-series takes place in a near-future when ghosts, or “blue lights”, roam the city streets. Most remain harmless...until a break-in at London's Maximum Security Necropolis triggers a surge of violent, brutal hauntings.
Enter Alice Hotwire, the local police force's resident Detective Exorcist—a job her fellow officers hate her for. It's a responsibility she doesn't want, in a world she doesn't understand, but she may be the only one who can save them all from ectoplasmic catastrophe.
“I knew I wanted this to be part of Radical’s library,” said President and Publisher Barry Levine. “Steve Pugh’s artwork is incredible, and the Alice character is equal parts beautiful and scrappy. The story itself is the perfect blend of supernatural, science fiction and adventure. I see this as one of our biggest new titles of 2009.”
The series has been a major project for Pugh as well, after years of development and collaboration with longtime colleague Warren Ellis.
“It’s been an enormous project, but I’ve been determined to get Alice into print for years, and I’m actually pleased it’s taken this long, because artistically, I think I’m at the top of my game,” Pugh said. “It's only through utter arrogance and ridiculous self-belief that I could rewrite a story by one of the most famous comic writers in mainstream publication.”
Hotwire: Requiem for the Dead #1 appears in the December 2008 Diamond Previews catalog, to ship February 2009. The first issue hits the stands with four covers, including art by Steve Pugh (Diamond Code: DEC084201), Alan Brooks (Diamond Code: DEC084202),Stjepan Sejic (Diamond Code: DEC084203) and a limited editionvariant from Luis Royo (Diamond Code: DEC084204), offered as a 1:10 incentive.
